Workshop Description

Let’s celebrate tomato season! In this joyful workshop, we’ll explore how to draw juicy tomatoes on warm-toned kraft paper using our signature combination of colored pencil and watercolor to bring out their rich reds, vibrant greens, and glossy highlights.

Tomatoes are wonderfully round, boldly colored, and full of interesting botanical details—making them a fun and rewarding subject for botanical illustration. Cut cross-sections reveal beautiful starburst patterns and translucent pulp, perfect for practicing texture, contrast, and composition. Whether this will be your first botanical drawing or your five-hundredth, this class is a fresh take on a classic subject.

What We’ll Practice

🎨 Working with Kraft Paper
Discover how the midtone tan of kraft paper acts as a perfect base, helping colors pop while allowing both shadows and highlights to shine. You’ll learn how to adjust your approach when working on toned paper and how to make the most of its warm, earthy surface.

🍅 Capturing Tomato Texture and Form
Learn to draw both whole and cut tomatoes—studying their shiny skin, juicy interiors, and those delicate green sepals. We’ll break down the techniques for creating realistic surfaces and forms by layering colored pencil and watercolor.

💡 Creating Depth, Light & Highlights
The best part of working on kraft paper is getting to add in bright highlights! Practice continuous toning from the lightest white to the darkest shadows to enhance your portrayal of its three-dimensional form. Explore how light interacts with smooth and translucent surfaces to create that unmistakable glossy tomato look.

Recommended Supplies:

NOTE: For this workshop we will be drawing on TAN KRAFT PAPER, so in addition to our usual supplies, please bring Tan Stonehenge Kraft Paper to class. We may also use a white Prismacolor colored pencil.

Find all of the supplies that we recommend here. Feel free to follow along with any supplies you have (your result may just end up looking a little different). Our lessons are about a combination of fundamental 3D art concepts and colored pencil and watercolor technique, so you can skip the supplies-specific tips and still learn a lot about art basics including perspective, light source, composition, etc. One of the main points we teach is colored pencil and watercolor technique for slow, continuous toning, but as long as you are able to achieve the same blending result with your chosen materials, you can still benefit from our course lessons.
